Global Collaboration for Pandemic Preparedness: CEPI and WHO Call for Coordinated Research
Urgent Action Needed to Prevent Future Pandemics
Geneva, August 1, 2024 - The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have issued an urgent call for globally coordinated collaborative research to prepare for the potential pandemics that could threaten global health in the future.
Addressing the Challenges of Pandemic Preparedness
At the Global Pandemic Preparedness Summit 2024 held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the WHO's RD Blueprint for Epidemics issued a report highlighting the need for a broader-based approach to pandemic preparedness.
The report emphasizes the importance of investing in research and development of vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics to mitigate the impact of future pandemics and calls for a global surveillance and response system that can rapidly detect and respond to emerging health threats.
Collaboration and Cooperation
CEPI and WHO have emphasized the need for collaboration and cooperation among governments, researchers, and industry partners to accelerate pandemic preparedness efforts.
This collaboration will involve sharing data, developing common research platforms, and ensuring equitable access to resources. The goal is to create a global network of experts and institutions that can work together to protect the world from future pandemics.
